Chair Message: New Years Day in June
by Mitch Perry, CPA
In the United States, and in other countries which use the Gregorian calendar, January 1 marks the beginning of a new year. If you live in Bali, your year begins in March, the exact day varying with the Balinese Lunar New Year. The Chinese New Year can fall anytime between January 21 and February 21. In fact, the list of New Years Days around the world is extensive. Well, here is one more New Years Day for your list. The Dallas CPA Society just launched its new year on June 1. The Society’s New Year brings with it an appreciation for the accomplishments of the past, and a sense of excitement for what lies ahead.
Building on the Past to Forge an Even Better Future
In the months leading up to June, the Society’s leadership has worked to establish priorities for the upcoming year. These include:
- CPE Day: DCPAS leadership is committed to continuing this annual event, which has been tremendously successful and popular in recent years. If your company or others you know have an interest in becoming sponsors of the DCPAS 2010 CPE Day, please contact the Society’s office at 972/960-8311.
- Leadership Development: This year, DCPAS will launch a new leadership development program designed to hone the skills of participants as well as introduce the next generation of DCPAS leaders to the Society’s governance and operations. The program will cover leadership concepts and skills that are beneficial to participants’ careers and highly valued by employers. Upon completion of the program, participants will be uniquely prepared to begin taking on leadership roles within the Society.
- Networking Opportunities: In surveys and focus groups conducted over recent months, members clearly indicated a desire for more networking opportunities. Watch the newsletter and website for more Society-sponsored networking events this year.
- CFO of the Year Awards: DCPAS participates in this event, in partnership with the Dallas Business Journal, the Association for Corporate Growth, and Financial Executives International. Last year’s awards luncheon was well attended, and yielded substantial positive recognition for the contributions of Dallas area CPA’s.
- Community Service: The Society will continue its support of the community through participation in the Love for Kids Christmas Party, Coat Drive and Toy Sorting, The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and its annual Tax Hotline held in conjunction with the Dallas Morning News.
- Employment Support: The DCPAS online resume service, which is designed to help bring members and prospective employers together, will undergo an upgrade. Look for improvements that will make the service easier to use and more useful to both member job-seekers and employers.
- Golf Tournament: This fun and popular event will continue in 2009/2010. If you have never participated in the DCPAS golf tournament, you're missing out on a fun day.
- Legislative and Regulatory Support: TSCPA and its chapters, including DCPAS, play a key role in the legislative process in Texas. These efforts continue, even though 2010 is not a legislative year. The Public Affairs committee works to continually ensure legislators and their staff are accurately informed about issues of interest to Texas CPA’s. If you know a legislator in your area, and are interested assisting this effort, please contact the Society office.
What Can DCPAS Do for You, and What Can You Do for DCPAS?
As your Chair for 2009/2010, I am keenly interested in maximizing the value of membership in the Society. With that goal in mind, I am reminded that with any voluntary organization, you get out of it what you put into it. Voluntary organizations like DPCAS provide a unique leadership laboratory, where members can develop valuable career skills, all while supporting their profession. The Society offers a number of opportunities for member involvement, and I encourage you to become familiar with those opportunities. You and your fellow members benefit when you share your unique skills and abilities is service to DCPAS.
