DCPAS Volunteers Take Hundreds of Calls at Tax Hotline
Every year, the Dallas CPA Society, in association with The Dallas Morning News, conducts a free tax hotline. DCPAS volunteers field hundreds of calls during the popular Sunday afternoon event. This year’s hotline was no different. On February 21st, 342 calls were received during the five hour event. Thirteen DCPAS volunteers fielded calls on a variety of topics, including the first time homebuyer’s credit, energy credits, capital losses and filing requirements, just to name a few.
The Dallas Morning News provided the telephone lines and equipment, and fed the volunteers. The community service project benefits hundreds of people who may not be able to afford professional tax assistance, and through publicity contributed by
The Dallas Morning News, raises public awareness of the valuable role CPAs play in our economy. Ken Sibley has overseen the planning, organization and execution of this effort for many years, and once again did an exemplary job in making the day a complete success.
Thank you to all who volunteered to take calls that day.
Member Appreciation Day Takes Shape
I’m pleased to report that the slate of speakers for our
CPE event of May 4th is rapidly taking shape. Once again, the event will offer our members 8 hours of CPE for just the cost of lunch. The committee, chaired by Ken Horwitz, has been hard at work recruiting speakers and arranging the schedule for the four tracks.
Many companies have been cutting marketing budgets in response to the current economic downturn. In the face of this difficult environment, we are pleased that so many of our sponsors from prior years have committed to sponsorship of this year’s event. Sponsorships play an important role in making the day lively and interesting, and helping to defray the cost of the event. While most of our sponsors from previous years have recommitted to this year’s event, some sponsorship opportunities are still available. If your company could benefit from exposure to almost 1,000 CPAs, or if you know someone whose company could benefit, I encourage you to contact
Farlene Powell at the DCPAS office for more information.
Leadership Development Academy Members Speak Out
Members of the inaugural class of the DCPAS Leadership Development Academy gave several on camera interviews last week. The interviews will appear in a video to be released in May. The video will appear on the DCPAS website and in promotional materials, and will be a key component in promoting membership and participation in the Society in future years. Thank you to all the members of the class and the task force for taking time out of your busy schedules to contribute to this important effort.
Keep Stress in Check
Many of us are well into our busiest time of the year. Our profession will present us with a number of challenges in these first few calendar months of 2010. I know many of you who have weathered the season for a number of years. Still, I’d like to remind everyone of the importance of a healthy balance during these busy and demanding times. Physicians tell us that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a key to managing stress. So, keep that stress in check, and I look forward to seeing you rested and refreshed at Member Appreciation Day May 4th!
