Welcome
Sponsors Make DCPAS Programs Possible
by Mitch Perry, CPA

Mitch Perry, CPAMembers Receive CPE at No Additional Cost
If you’ve read earlier installments of this newsletter, or if you’ve been around me or any of the DCPAS board members, then you’ve heard about the seventeen hours of free CPE offered by the Society in the current fiscal year. This “Member Appreciation Series” kicked off in August with a one hour presentation at the Marriot Quorum in Addison. In the next three months, the Society will offer its members two additional four-hour sessions at no additional cost. The series capstone event, to be held in May, is our annual free CPE day, a multi-track, 8-credit-hour seminar. If you have never attended free CPE day, you’ve missed a great opportunity. I am very proud of the lineup of speakers and topics that the Society has offered over the years, and we intend to continue this tradition of excellence this year.

Members and Sponsors Work Together to Make It Happen
A substantial portion of the cost for these events is funded by sponsorships. DCPAS members have volunteered their time and energy to recruit and build strong relationships with our sponsors over the years. The staff at the DCPAS office has worked diligently to ensure our sponsors and members receive the maximum benefit from their involvement in our free CPE offerings, and the effort has paid off in the form of ongoing commitments from sponsors and unparalleled value for members.

You Can Help Make it Even Better
Information about sponsorships is easily accessed on the Society’s website. There, potential sponsors will find a brochure available for download, and a short video featuring the comments of previous years’ sponsors. In addition, I am happy to answer any questions from potential sponsors, and the staff at the DCPAS office will work closely with them to ensure the best possible return on their investment. The previous years’ events have been outstanding, and we expect this track record of success to attract a great deal of return sponsorship. However, we want to continue to improve on the benefits of membership in the DCPAS, and for this reason, it is important that we continue to grow the level of sponsorship. If you think about the vendor, customer and other relationships you have developed over the years, I’ll bet you can identify a number of potential sponsors for free CPE offerings. I encourage you to refer those potential sponsors to the DCPAS. You can do so with the confidence that their investment will be worthwhile, and that their involvement will enhance the benefits of membership in the DCPAS.

Appraisal Board Notice

The Appraisal Review Board (ARB) is a quasi-judicial body appointed by the Board of Directors of the Dallas Central Appraisal District.  Members are charged with the function of providing an impartial review of the appraisal records prepared by the Appraisal District. The ARB is empowered to equalize values of all properties in the District in relation to fair market value and hear taxpayer appeals through scheduled hearings for those that dispute their appraised value. The ARB members do not work for the Appraisal District, but rather, arbitrate between the taxpayer and the District in order to determine market value.

The ARB is comprised of eighty (80) members who hold office for terms of two years beginning January 1.  To serve on the ARB, you must have lived in the area served by the appraisal district for at least two years before taking office.  Other restrictions may and do apply. Members are compensated up to $160.00 per day for service.

Appraisal Review Board hearings normally begin in the middle of May and conclude on or before the end of July.   Supplemental hearings will continue once a month during the remainder of the year .You may be required to work eight hours per day for an extended period of time.

Please contact the Dallas Central Appraisal District to receive an application or for  answers to  any of your questions, 2949 N Stemmons Freeway, Dallas TX  75247 @ 214-631-0520.  Ask for Rick Kuehler, Jerry Olive, or Joy Brooks.

Annual Coat Drive
Help a kid stay warm this winter! The annual coat drive has begun for some of the neediest children in the metroplex, ages 6 through teenager, sizes 6 through adult. These "gently worn" coats will be distributed at the Love for Kids, Inc. Christmas Party on December 12, 2009. Warm gloves, winter hats and scarves are also appreciated by these children.

Little effort is required: just decorate a box and take to your company, church or group. This is a good time since most of us are cleaning out our closets now and discarding those out-grown clothes. If you would like to volunteer to help with the coat drive, or if your company is interested in sponsoring a drop-off box, call DCPAS, Veronica Garza, at 972-960-8311 or email vgarza@cpadallas.org with any questions.

We can begin accepting coats October 1, and it is requested we receive them no later than November 30 to allow time to sort sizes.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE NEWS
As has been done for a number of years, the Dallas CPA Society again awarded scholarships to several bright and deserving students attending colleges and universities in the Chapter’s geographic area.  The students (there are six this year) are either graduate accounting students or seniors majoring in accounting at one of the following schools: University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Arlington, Southern Methodist University, University of North Texas, and Texas A&M – Commerce.  The recipients are chosen by the Scholarship committee based on an extensive application that is submitted and due diligence that is subsequently performed by the committee members.

Thanks to each of you who have contributed to the scholarship fund either directly or as part of the dues check-off.  Your contribution enables the Chapter to continue to recognize and support some very qualified and deserving future CPAs!

We will spotlight one student in each newsletter and give you a little background information about each of them.  If you happen to know one of them, please congratulate them for their accomplishments; they, and others like them, are the future of our profession!
